ABOUT PRAVASI WELFARE
—————

A large number of people live outside India. A good percentage of them belong to the lower or middle income group. This large group of middle-lower income group faces many basic problems during their life in Gulf/other foreign countries and back home. The saving habits and rehabilitation facilities they get are not very promising. Similarly, a good percentage of Keralites live outside Kerala but inside India. These non-resident Keralites (NRK-India) also face similar situations as NRKs abroad. Realizing such situations, the state of Kerala came up with a unique initiative of its kind in the country to set up a welfare fund to provide welfare schemes to NRKs (in India) and NRKs (in India). The Kerala Non-Resident Keralites Welfare Act, 2008 passed by the Government of Kerala Legislative Assembly, Kerala Non-Resident Keralites Welfare Board came into existence. More than eighty five thousand NRKs are members of the welfare fund. NRKs abroad who have now returned to India for permanent residence after at least two years of overseas employment can also become members of this welfare fund. The Act envisages several welfare schemes like pension schemes, family pension schemes, medical assistance and death assistance.
